First Impressions

Great Book, lots of interesting choices and options in terms of army build and play style. 

I like the theme coming through the 9th edition book where ‘obvious’ power is being removed or heavily restricted.

Why play the Dark Angels

 

  • Access to all rules in codex space marines
  • Detachment Abilities 
    • Speed of the Raven - Dev Doctrine - Ravenwing gain extra 3 inch more and can fire all weapons even if advanced at minus 1 to hit
    • Fire Discipline - Tactical Doctrine Greenwing can fire into combat at BS5+
    • Implacable - Assault Doctrine Deathwing can reroll wounds against characters, vehicle or monsters
    • Outrider detachment of pure ravenwing don't cost any C P - bikes and outriders gain obsec
    • Vanguard detachment of pure deathwing/inner circle don't cost any CP - terminators gain obsec
  • Dark Angels Abilities
    • Jink - 5++ if moved, 4++ if advance - typically ravening wing
    • Inner circle - infantry gain transhuman, auto pass morale, need to pass a leadership test to fall backit rolls if remained stationary. AutoPass combat attrition
  • Rites of Initiation - upgrade characters, dreads and transports to gain deathwing keyword (for use in pure deathwing Vanguard)

What is the play style of the Dark Angels 

  • Raven Wing - fast with high fire power, can operate with independence
  • Death Wing - durable with high melee power, can operate with independence 
  • Green Wing - High durable can be formed in castle, fire power with decent melee support
  • Why limit to just one? Mix and match to suit

Pennant of Remembrance 

  • Select one deathwing core unit, minus one damage

Reliquary of the Repentant 

  • -1 invun save aura - to a max of 5++

Cup of Retribution  

  • + Once per battle plus 1 attack - auto pass litany 

 

Warlord Traits

    • Brilliant Strategies - roll back doctrine by one for one unit

 

  • Fury of the Lion - Aura plus one strength on the charge 

 

  • Decisive Tactician - Aura plus one to advance and charge 
  • Watched - once per game auto deny 

 

Psychic Powers

  • Mind Worm  - fight last on a unit (CV 6 18")
  • Aversion - minus one to hit on a unit, if within 6 of the caster minus one attack (CV 6 24")
  • Righteous Repugnance - pick a unit reroll to hit and wound in combat (CV 7 12")
  • Engulfing Fear - turn of obsec and stop actions (CV 7 24")
  • Mind Wipe - pick a unit and turn off an aura (CV 7 18")

Stratagems 

  • Full throttle - move again with Ravenwing (1/2CP)
  • No foe too great to subdue - deathwing plus one to wound and AP against vehicle or monster (2CP) 
  • Tactical Appraisal (1CP) unit within 6 of a warlord chose a combat doctrine
  • The Hunt  (2/3CP) pre game move with Ravenwing
  • Swift Strike  (2/3CP) fall back after you have fought with Ravenwing
  • Targeting Guidance (2CP) unit with 18 of a speeder plus one to hit for whole army
  • Statis Shell (2CP) - if hit no fall back
  • Weapons of the Dark Age (2CP) plus one damage on plasma
  • Intractable (2CP) fall back and shoot - there is a 1CP strat for bikes and speeders in codex space marines
